Nestlé officially opened its new RM75 million regional plant for non-dairy creamer at its Shah Alam Complex in Selangor today, giving Malaysia a larger role in the company’s global Halal business.
The event was graced by H.R.H. Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Al-Haj Ibni Almarhum Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Al-Haj, the Sultan of Selangor, in Shah Alam today, where Nestlé already has three other plants in the factory complex. The new non-dairy creamer plant has an output capacity of up to 40,000 tonnes per year, using state-of-theart creamer technology and Nestlé’s latest manufacturing processes and know-how.
The plant will produce COFFEE-MATE® Non-Dairy Creamer as well as Non-Dairy Creamer for other Nestlé products such as its 3-in-1 coffee and the products will initially be exported to Indonesia, Philippines, Turkey and Russia.
COFFEE-MATE®, which is Malaysia’s No.1 powdered creamer with an 88% market share, is also the No.1 brand in the world and in the region (Thailand and Philippines). The COFFEE-MATE® produced in Malaysia is certified Halal, as are all the other Nestlé products manufactured in Malaysia.
Speaking at the launch of the new plant, Executive Director for Production at Nestlé (Malaysia) Berhad, Dr. Magdi Batato, said Malaysia is a very important part of Nestlé’s global business, particularly in the manufacture of Halal products, as Nestlé Malaysia has the distinction of being both the largest producer of Halal products and the Centre of Excellence for Halal within the Group.
“Nestlé Malaysia’s ability as a reliable and efficient manufacturer, coupled with the availability of raw materials locally and the country’s good infrastructure for regional export made Malaysia a natural choice to set up this regional plant,” said Dr. Batato.
“The launch of this factory marks an important step forward in our Malaysian and global operations. The success of Nestlé in Malaysia can be attributed to the Government’s close collaboration with the private sector, offering competitive incentives for foreign direct investment which is aided by its economic stability in this country,” he added.
Nestlé’s manufacturing facilities in the state of Selangor includes its Petaling Jaya factory which was opened in 1962; the Batu Tiga factory which was commissioned in 1971; and the Shah Alam Complex which started in 1978.
The Shah Alam Complex includes the Raja Muda Factory, the Shah Alam factory as well as regional plants for cereals and non-dairy creamer and covers a total land area of 82,000 sq meters with 47,500 sq meters of built-up area. In addition to the non-dairy creamer, the complex produces Nestlé’s range of liquid drinks, soluble coffee, infant nutrition and adult cereals as well as other beverage products. To-date, the plant employs 686 workers.
Since last year, Nestlé Malaysia has invested at total of RM100 million to enhance its technology and manufacturing facilities at its production complex in Shah Alam, Selangor. The total investment covers upgrades and renovations at the complex.
