In line with the UN Millennium Development Goals to “eradicate extreme poverty and hunger” as well as “promote gender equality and empower women”, Nestlé strives to meet the needs of the underprivileged community. Although Malaysia does not need to address the problem of “extreme poverty and hunger”, there are pockets of the population who require adequate nourishment and economic assistance to improve their lives.
Currently, Nestlé Malaysia provides monthly food aid to 28 organisations including orphanages, old folks homes, schools for special children, health bodies and other charitable organisations. The food aid of MILO, milk powder, cereals and other nutritious products help provide the necessary nourishment for this underprivileged group.
Working with a woman’s NGO, Nestlé has helped improve the economic status of single mothers by providing them with the necessary skills to weave baskets from used newspapers and magazines. The women are able to sell these environmentally friendly baskets to be used as gift hampers to corporations such as Nestlé for a reasonable profit.
The rural community is not left out. Nestlé, working with reputable international NGOs have established much needed kindergartens in rural areas in the interior of Sabah to ensure that young children in the rural areas are also given equal opportunities in education.
During natural disasters such as landslides and floods, Nestlé is always on hand to provide relief to rescue workers, victims and volunteers by offering food and beverages as nourishment. |
