  • The workshop aims to educate teachers on NHK modules, which are focused on improving nutrition knowledge and cultivating healthy lifestyle habits among students.

In line with its commitment to promote healthy lifestyles amongst Malaysians, Nestlé Malaysia recently held its third annual Train-the-Trainer workshop as part of its Nestlé Healthy Kids (NHK) Programme, a global platform which aims to help nurture healthier schoolchildren.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Education Malaysia and the Nutrition Society of Malaysia (NSM), the Train-the-Trainer initiative educates teachers on NHK modules, which are focused on improving nutrition knowledge and cultivating healthy lifestyle habits among students.

The three-day workshop was launched in Kuching, Sarawak, by Mr Cyril Christopher Singham, Principal Assistant Director, Health, Intervention and Hostel Management Sector, School Management Division at the Ministry of Education Malaysia. As a result of the successful workshops over the past two years, this year saw many of the previous participants returning, together with new participants. In total, 166 Senior Assistants of Student Affairs and wardens from primary day-boarding schools in Sabah and Sarawak attended the workshop.

This year’s workshop was led by prominent healthcare practitioners, Dr. Zawiah Hashim, Dr. Chin Yit Siew, and Prof. Dr. Norimah A. Karim who introduced Phase 3 Modules with more in-depth topics, including Healthy Food Preparation Methods, Reading Food Packaging Labels and Let’s Exercise and Do Sports. The teachers also refreshed their memories of previous year’s modules as well as ways to teach and interact with students using NHK modules.

Mr Cyril Christopher Singham commented, “The Ministry is glad to once again partner with Nestlé and NSM for the third consecutive year of the programme. Collaborations between the private and public sectors is a progressive step for education. Through this initiative, we hope that our schoolchildren will learn to embrace healthy habits. The modules over the past two years have shown very positive results, and we are confident that this year’s Train-the-Trainer workshop will prove beneficial for both teachers and students alike.”

Eliza Mohamed, Director of Group Corporate Affairs, Nestlé Malaysia, said, “As the world’s leading Nutrition, Health and Wellness company, we believe good nutrition is crucial for the wellbeing of all individuals. The NHK programmes are all the more relevant in view of the significant prevalence of nutrition-related issues, such as nutrient deficiencies and rising obesity, particularly in schoolchildren. In line with our Creating Shared Value philosophy, we will continue to undertake efforts to make a positive impact on the lives of all Malaysians. At Nestlé, we believe that in order to create long-term value for the company, it must also create value for the society at the same time.”

According to Dr. Tee E Siong, Chairman of the NHK Expert Committee and President of the Nutrition Society of Malaysia, “At NSM, we believe that educating our young children to lead healthy and active lifestyles will ensure that we bring up a generation of healthy Malaysians. This will eventually pave the way to a healthy nation. Programmes such as Nestlé Healthy Kids are essential in order to bring about change by inculcating better dietary habits.”

Puan Fatimah Sapawi from SK Kampung Iran, Subis, Sarawak said, “This is my third year participating in the Train-the-Trainer Workshop, and each workshop has been extremely enlightening. The modules taught are very interactive and have proven to be effective when we introduce these lessons into our everyday classes. My students always enjoy the NHK lessons and I look forward to sharing my new-found knowledge from this year’s workshop with them.”
