Loving Your Heart One Step at a Time

YABhg Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, Former Prime Minister of Malaysia , his wife, YABhg Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah, YABhg Tun Ahmad Sarji, President of the Heart Foundation of Malaysia together with Alois Hofbauer, Region Head of Nestlé Malaysia/Singapore were joined by thousands of Malaysians whom have pledged to lead a healthier lifestyle by participating in the Walk-A-Mile event, jointly organised by NESTLÉ OMEGA PLUS and the Heart Foundation of Malaysia, at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa here today.

The event is a continued effort by NESTLÉ OMEGA PLUS and the Heart Foundation of Malaysia to raise awareness on the importance of a healthy heart as the key factor in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

"We at Nestlé believe that a healthy lifestyle begins with a healthy heart. That is why, Nestlé through NESTLÉ OMEGA PLUS had consistently organised the Walk-a-Mile event for the past 12 years as a continued effort in promoting and reminding Malaysians about the importance of a healthy heart", said Alois Hofbauer here today.

The Walk-A-Mile campaign has been held annually since 2001 in conjunction with World Heart Day, which falls on September 29 every year, with the aim of increasing public awareness and promoting preventive measures in the reduction of cardiovascular disease and strokes.

This year, participants were flagged off from the Astaka, Taman Tasik Titiwangsa in Kuala Lumpur where Malaysians from all walks of life participated in the 1.5 km walk around the lake. The event is supported by the Ministry of Health and the World Heart Federation. Statistics from the National Health Morbidity Survey (NHMS) in 2011 reveals that around 1 in 3 Malaysians suffer from high cholesterol. This is alarming, showing that cholesterol does not discriminate.

"These statistics proves that there is still much to be done to increase the awareness about healthy living in Malaysia and we firmly believe that the first step is very important. At Nestlé, we believe that good food is the foundation of good life; and we have been nourishing the nation for more than 100 years. NESTLÉ OMEGA PLUS is dedicated to continue efforts in educating and advocating heart-healthy living through events like Walk-a-Mile and other initiatives", said Alois Hofbauer.

Alois Hofbauer also presented a cheque from Nestlé for RM 30,000 to YABhg Tun Ahmad Sarji bin Abdul Hamid, President of the Heart Foundation of Malaysia which will be utilised to increase awareness and educating the public on heart and circulatory diseases.

Participants were also treated to an array of pocket shows such as cheerleading, line dancing and silat performances, nutritional talks, health checks, and sampling of NESTLÉ OMEGA PLUS milk, which contains ACTICOL with added plant sterols – scientifically proven to lower blood cholesterol level.
