Nestlé Malaysia has pledged to support over 200,000 Malaysians through immediate COVID-19 pandemic relief efforts and by developing programmes that will support the livelihoods of lower income communities, as well as small enterprises most impacted by the current crisis. Nestlé Malaysia commits to invest RM15 million as funding for these initiatives, that will be articulated under the Company’s “Nestlé Cares” umbrella as well as through specific initiatives supported by its different brands.

Mr Juan Aranols, Chief Executive Officer, Nestlé (Malaysia) Berhad, said, “We are mindful that the road to recovery post-MCO will not be an easy one as many Malaysians have lost their jobs and many small companies are struggling, and this is the time for companies like ours to provide a helping hand. Hence, we commit to provide support to over 200,000 Malaysians. The first phase, already started, is focused on providing immediate relief through our partnership with the Malaysian Red Crescent society and multiple food donations to front liners and people in need. A second phase will follow to focus on supporting livelihoods of the most impacted communities. In summary, it is about helping those who have been most impacted by the COVID-19 crisis to get back on their feet. In total, we pledge to channel RM15 million into funding for these relief efforts,”

Nestlé Cares Phase 1: Immediate COVID-19 pandemic relief

As part of this first phase, Nestlé Malaysia is happy to contribute to Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) a cash contribution of RM1 million, heeding the call of #responsMalaysia. This contribution will be channelled towards supporting critical upgrade of emergency medical equipment in MRCS ambulances, which offer essential patient transport services to COVID-19 designated hospitals in the Klang Valley. A further RM6 00,000 was also donated for the distribution of 10,000 Nestlé family food packs to vulnerable communities via established MRCS and partner NGO networks nationwide. In addition to this contribution, Nestlé has also channelled over RM500,000 towards donations of food and beverage products to hospitals to support the needs of medical front liners, to quarantine centres, as well as to university students, through Yayasan Food Bank Malaysia. These efforts under the first phase of Nestlé Cares will see a total contribution of more than RM2 million from Nestlé Malaysia.

Commenting on the partnership with Nestlé Malaysia, the Chairman of MRCS, YTM Dato Seri Di Raja Tan Sri Tunku Intan Safinaz binti Almarhum Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah said, “As Chairman and on behalf of MRCS members and volunteers, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to Nestlé Malaysia for their contribution and for their support to the #responsMalaysia initiative. MRCS would also like to take this opportunity to invite more businesses to lend much-needed support to the nation’s front-liners and to those adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. It is our ultimate mission to unite corporations, NGOs and members of the public – from all sectors and all walks of life - together alongside front-liners, in solidarity, to overcome this global threat and eventually restore this nation to the peaceful, vibrant, multicultural Eden we all know and love.”

Nestlé Cares Phase 2: Relief efforts to support livelihoods

The second phase will help address socioeconomic issues emerging such as the loss of livelihoods among the B40 and lower income communities, as well as a number of impacted local small and medium enterprises.

Nestlé Malaysia through iconic brands such as MAGGI, MILO or NESCAFÉ, will be spearheading initiatives that help to create employment opportunities for B40 communities, as well as to provide support to impacted local suppliers and vendors in Nestlé’s value chain. This will ensure that they are able to sustain their businesses in the wake of COVID-19. This comprises SMEs, distributors, Food & Beverages restaurant operators and coffee shop owners, amongst others. Meal distribution programmes will also be rolled out to B40 and lower-income families along with underprivileged students and nationwide front liners.

In addition to this, additional funding will also be allocated to provide financial aid to charitable organisations across the nation, through Nestlé’s ongoing biggest contest to date – Peraduan Nestlé Gaji Seumur Hidup (Nestlé Salary for Life contest).

“We are committed to play our part in the national response to this pandemic and we are directing significant investment and resources to support the most vulnerable and impacted communities in Malaysia through these difficult times. With these initiatives in place, Nestlé Malaysia aims to help many Malaysians overcome their difficulties and we will continue to contribute to the nation’s recovery effort through our ongoing operational activities, our planned investments and the unwavering commitment in support of the nation,” concluded Mr Aranols
