Nestlé and Selangor Youth Community Sign MOU Promoting New Chapter of Sustainability through Youth Workshops
Petaling Jaya, August 8, 2024 – A committed advocate of sustainability and community engagement, Nestlé Malaysia has been recognised as the "Most Supportive Corporate Partner" by The King’s Trust International, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving global health and education by fostering partnerships between governments, corporations and civil society. The accolade is testament to Nestlé’s significant contributions to uplifting the lives and minds of Malaysian youth through ongoing initiatives under the TEAM Programme with Selangor Youth Community (SAY). Since its inception in late 2022, this partnership has united youths from Selangor and representatives from the Pusat Pemulihan Penagihan Narkotik (PUSPEN), emphasising environmental awareness and cementing Nestlé Malaysia’s role as a leader in the sustainability journey.
In conjunction with receiving this award, Nestlé Malaysia and SAY have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to extend their collaborative efforts in fostering environmental consciousness and sustainable practices among local youth through a series of workshops and educational programmes.
The workshops under the TEAM Programme will empower young individuals by building their awareness on numerous sustainability-centred aspects ranging from waste management and recycling to the principles of a circular economy. With hands-on activities, such as the Klang River clean up and visits to recycling facilities, the workshops will provide skills, insights and practical information on environmental stewardship that will enable them to make sound choices while inspiring their communities to adopt similar practices.
Mr. Juan Aranols, Chief Executive Officer of Nestlé (Malaysia) Berhad, said, “Nestlé is deeply honoured to receive this recognition from The King’s Trust International. This award reflects that our initiatives, including the TEAM Programme and other efforts under Project SAVE, have been moving in the right direction. Our collaboration with SAY exemplifies how working together with a common goal can lead to meaningful change by reaching more young people and instilling in them the values necessary for a sustainable future.”
He added, “Seeing the drive and enthusiasm of the youth participants gives me immense hope for the future of the nation. Undoubtedly, we at Nestlé, are privileged to not just create meaningful programmes, but to be able to contribute towards building the next generation of environmental champions.”
Mr. Aiman Syafiq Nazri, Chief Executive Officer of Selangor Youth Community, stated, “Nestlé has been an exemplary partner in our mission to create sustainable communities. Their contributions through the TEAM Programme Malaysia have significantly impacted our youth thus far, providing them with invaluable opportunities and knowledge about sustainability. This MoU signifies our shared passion to fostering a culture of environmental stewardship among the youth, by empowering them with the right tools and knowledge to drive sustainable practices in communities.”
Since its inception, Nestlé Malaysia has been committed to enhancing quality of life and contributing to a waste free future through various sustainability measures. Among these, Project SAVE has focused on creating a viable circular economy model for post-consumer packaging, reaching 200,000 households across 6 cities and successfully collecting approximately 26,000 tonnes of post-consumer packaging waste. The Klang River Plastic Collection project, the Door-to-Door Collection & Recycling Programme, and the Informal Sector Aggregation pilot are just a few examples of the impactful work being done to promote recycling and waste management.
