Kerbside recycling programme aims to benefit close to 20,000 households

Kuala Lumpur, February 15, 2022 - Nestlé Malaysia marked a new milestone in its efforts to drive plastic waste collection and recycling, with today’s signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Alam Flora Environmental Solutions Sdn Bhd (AFES), to establish a joint kerbside recycling programme in Kuala Lumpur. Nestlé expands this way the company’s pioneering programme in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, launched in 2020 which was extended in 2021 to Subang Jaya and Shah Alam. With this initiative, Nestlé will now be working with four large cities within the Klang Valley area to recover post-consumer plastics and facilitate higher waste collection as well as recycling rates.

Dato’ Mohd Zain bin Hassan, Director of Alam Flora Environmental Solutions and Mr Nazar bin Abdul Raof, Chief Operating Officer of Alam Flora Environmental Solutions at the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement for a joint kerbside recycling programme in Kuala Lumpur.

Through this programme, Nestlé will be partnering with AFES to increase the public's engagement and participation rate in kerbside recycling activities in Kuala Lumpur. This will entail door-to-door collection for landed, gated and non-gated premises, starting with 15 townships in the Greater Kuala Lumpur area. This includes Damansara, Bukit Persekutuan, Taman Bukit Pantai, Taman Bandaraya, Seksyen 16, Kiara View, Taman Villa Serene Kiara II, Bangsar Baru, Bukit Tunku, Lucky Garden, Bangsar, Desa Seri Hartamas, Taman Bangsar, Taman Sa and Taman Sri Hartamas.

During the MoA signing ceremony, Mr Juan Aranols, Chief Executive Officer, Nestlé (Malaysia) Berhad said, “We are pleased to continue expanding our recycling programme to benefit the residents of Kuala Lumpur, building on the overwhelmingly positive response from the community we have seen in our previous initiatives in Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya and Shah Alam. Building on this success and with the support of AFES, one of the leading environmental solution companies in Malaysia, and of our long-time partner Tetra Pak, we hope to increase rates of segregation, collection and recycling. This is in line with our commitment to ensure that none of our packaging, including plastics, ends up in landfills or as litter, to fulfil our vision of a waste free future.”

YBhg. Dato' Mohd Zain Bin Hassan, Director of AFES, further commented, “The partnership forged, augurs well with our continuous efforts, as a leading environmental management company, in providing the highest quality of environmental solutions that focuses on value creation that harmonises the co-existence between human and nature.”

“Creating a clean environment is the cornerstone to our success and our goals are well-aligned with those of Nestlé. By combining our expertise and resources with Nestlé, we are optimistic that we can together contribute to a more sustainable future for Kuala Lumpur, in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals,” he added.

Starting March 2022, the first phase will benefit more than 10,000 residents of landed housing, whereby dedicated collection for recyclable waste will be carried out by AFES. Exclusively for this partnership with Nestlé, AFES will provide two new dedicated 11 metric tonne open tipper trucks and establish new collection routes and schedules to collect the recyclables. A second phase is also targeted to commence in May 2022 to reach 9,000 residents of apartment buildings within the area.

Similar to Nestlé’s other community recycling initiatives, participating households will be equipped with receptacles and a programme leaflet to ensure a seamless process for all. The post-consumer materials that will be collected through this programme include paper, cardboard, plastic, used beverage cartons, metal and glass.
