Programme has reached 14,000 households with successful pilot project in George Town

Penang, January 17, 2025 - Building on the success of its Door-to-Door Collection and Recycling Project in five municipalities in Selangor, Nestlé Malaysia announces the expansion of its initiatives to Penang Island in partnership with the Majlis Bandaraya Pulau Pinang (MBPP). This initiative, which is part of the company's larger Project SAVE, the largest voluntary Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) effort in Malaysia, is designed to enhance the collection and recycling of post-consumer waste on the Island.

The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) marks a significant milestone in the partnership between Nestlé Malaysia and MBPP. This collaboration will extend the Company’s Door-to-Door Collection and Recycling Project to more than 13,000 households across 39 condominium units and 2 landed residential areas in 2025. This agreement underscores a shared commitment to developing a sustainable waste management ecosystem for Penang Island. Beyond providing operational support, the partnership prioritizes community engagement through Communication, Education, and Public Awareness (CEPA) campaigns, aimed at creating awareness and to encourage active participation in sustainable waste management practices among residents, fostering a cleaner and greener environment for all.

After a pilot phase kicked off in January 2024 in George Town mainly in Tanjung Tokong and Jelutong area, the programme has successfully engaged over 14,000 households across two landed residential areas and 21 strata properties. With the support of Penang Green Council and ESH Resource Management Sdn Bhd, the Project has resulted in the collection of 160 tonnes of dry mixed recyclables, including 28 tonnes of plastics to date.

Juan Aranols, Chief Executive Officer of Nestlé Malaysia, said, “The expansion of Project SAVE to Penang Island further brings to reality our unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and our vision for a waste-free Malaysia. By engaging communities and working hand-in-hand with stakeholders like MBPP, we aim to drive impactful initiatives that reduce waste, promote recycling and set the stage for a more sustainable nation. This is part of Nestlé Malaysia’s commitment to achieving plastic neutrality and ensuring that none of our packaging, including plastics, ends up in landfills or the ocean.”

Dato’ Ir. Rajendran A/L P. Anthony, Datuk Bandar Pulau Pinang, commented, “The collaboration between MBPP and Nestlé Malaysia is a testament to what can be achieved when stakeholders come together with a shared commitment to protecting the environment. Through recycling solutions tailored to our communities, we are building a greener Penang for future generations.”

Since its launch in 2020, Project SAVE has steadily grown to become the largest voluntary EPR initiative in Malaysia partnering with local municipal councils, including Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya (MBPJ), Majlis Bandaraya Subang Jaya (MBSJ), Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam (MBSA), Majlis Bandaraya Diraja Klang (MBDK), and concessionaire Alam Flora Environmental Solutions Sdn Bhd (AFES). Today, the programme reaches approximately 200,000 households across six cities and has already diverted 31,000 tonnes of post-consumer packaging waste from reaching landfills and oceans, including nearly 21,000 tonnes of plastic.

Project SAVE has been acknowledged as a leading case study for best practices in enhancing recycling participation rates by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Malaysia’s Ministry of Environment and Water (KASA). Through initiatives like Project SAVE and a variety of other plastic neutrality efforts, including the reduction of virgin plastic content in our packaging, Nestlé is dedicated to fostering a cleaner, waste-free Malaysia. We remain committed to delivering halal, Malaysian-made, nutritious, and high-quality products, with sustainability at the heart of our business practices.
