Empowering mothers to inspire healthier lives among PPR communities

Selangor, April 12, 2022 - Aimed at empowering Malaysians to lead healthier lives, Nestlé Malaysia is collaborating with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) to spearhead the Putra Community Nutrition Ambassador Programme (PUTRACNAP). Kicking off the partnership, Nestlé Malaysia and UPM jointly signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA).

To help minimise nutritional gaps faced by the communities, this one-year programme targets to recruit 100 mothers with primary school children from selected People’s Housing Project (PPR) communities in the Klang Valley to empower them to become Nutrition Ambassadors. The mothers will undergo Train-the-Trainer workshops, imparting knowledge and skills on healthy eating, physical activity and urban farming, which they can subsequently use to empower their extended communities towards more sustainable, healthier lifestyles.

Dato’ Adnan Pawanteh, Executive Director, Group Corporate Affairs of Nestlé Malaysia, said, “As the Good Food, Good Life company, we firmly believe in the power of food in shaping happier and healthier communities. Coupled with a keen awareness that Malaysian children are suffering from the dual burden of stunting and obesity due to malnutrition, along with micronutrient deficiencies faced by both children and adults, we aim to help to address this by working alongside UPM through  the launch of PUTRACNAP. By sharing nutrition knowledge and inspiring mothers who are pillars of the community to become Nutrition Ambassadors, we hope to inspire more Malaysians to lead healthier lives, particularly among PPR households.”

YBhg. Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohd Roslan Bin Sulaiman, Vice-Chancellor of UPM, commented, “In line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and supporting the Ministry of Health’s National Plan of Action for Nutrition of Malaysia III 2016-2025, we are pleased to team up with Nestlé Malaysia for this programme, nurturing Nutrition Ambassadors to improve knowledge, attitude and practice on healthy lifestyles. By putting into practice what they have learned, we hope this will help to improve the nutritional status of communities.”

Under this three-phase community-based programme, Phase 1 is targeted to kick-off in May 2022, entailing the enrolment of eligible participants, along with a Nutrition and Health Awareness campaign. Phase 2 will entail the Train-the-Trainers component via Putra Community Nutrition Ambassador Workshops, covering key areas such as nutrition consultation, cooking classes, physical activities and education on grocery shopping and urban farming. This will be followed by Phase 3 which involves programmes led by Nutrition Ambassadors in their respective PPRs, such as cooking competitions, nutrition exhibitions, physical activity sessions and demonstrations on urban farming and planting activities.

To encourage participation and recognise achievements, Nutrition Ambassadors with the greatest improvement in knowledge, attitude and practices related to nutrition, as well as overall nutritional status, will be awarded with prizes during the closing ceremony of the programme to be held in early 2023.
