Pioneering collaboration started in 2020 to continue through the next 3 years
Nestlé Malaysia and Yayasan Food Bank Malaysia (YFBM) are strengthening their longstanding collaboration through the signing of a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), establishing a formal framework to enhance food redistribution efforts, support communities in need and reduce avoidable food waste. Building on a partnership that began in 2020, the collaboration has helped channel suitable food and beverage products to vulnerable communities across Malaysia while advancing more sustainable consumption practices. To date, Nestlé Malaysia has contributed more than RM7 million worth of products through food redistribution and humanitarian relief initiatives undertaken with YFBM.

The agreement was signed by Nestlé Malaysia CEO Juan Aranols and YFBM CEO Johan Halid. In conjunction with the MoU signing, Nestlé Malaysia employee volunteers and YFBM came together to prepare 800 food and nutrition aid packs to help families in the remote areas of Tumpat and Jeli, Kelantan to prepare for the upcoming monsoon season. The packs contain essential Nestlé products such as MILO, EVERYDAY, MAGGI, NESCAFÉ, NESTUM and KOKO KRUNCH cereals. This is part of Nestlé Malaysia's annual Nationwide Flood Aid Relief initiative to support underserved communities during the monsoon period, when prolonged rain and adverse weather can create difficulties to move essential supplies to more isolated locations.

The collaboration supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) by improving access to food for vulnerable communities, and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) through the redistribution of suitable surplus food. It also contributes to SDG 13 (Climate Action), by preventing edible, in-date products from going to waste and reducing associated greenhouse gas emissions. Beyond food assistance, it demonstrates how businesses, NGOs and community partners can work together to create social value while advancing sustainability.
Juan Aranols, Chief Executive Officer of Nestlé Malaysia, said, “At Nestlé, our Creating Shared Value approach is about making a positive difference for both people and the planet. Working with Yayasan Food Bank Malaysia enables us to support communities in need while ensuring suitable surplus products across the value chain can be put to good use. This new agreement strengthens our collaboration and provides a stronger platform for us to continue expanding that support. With the monsoon season approaching, acting early is especially important for communities that may become harder to reach later in the year. Through this initiative, we can help families in these isolated communities to be well stocked up with nutritious high quality products to help their resiliency throughout the heavy monsoon season. We are thankful for the active role our volunteering employees play alongside YFBM in making this support possible.”
YAM Tengku Zatashah binti Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, YFBM, added, “Food assistance is most effective when it is consistent, well organised and able to reach people where support is needed. Public-private partnerships such as this allow us to bring together food resources, volunteers and our distribution network to serve communities in need more effectively. At the same time, there is real value in making sure that good, usable food is not wasted. We appreciate Nestlé Malaysia’s continued commitment and look forward to sustaining this collaboration over the long term.”
This new MoU formalises and expands existing collaboration between Nestlé Malaysia and YFBM since the start of 2020 including food redistribution and monsoon relief initiatives that have supported remote island communities and isolated villages during the monsoon period. Under the agreement, Nestlé Malaysia will continue to provide high quality surplus products fully suitable for consumption, while YFBM will coordinate their safe and responsible distribution to beneficiaries.
The initiative is also part of Nestlé Sayang Komuniti, which encourages Nestlé employees to actively contribute to community and environmental programmes across Malaysia.
