PETALING JAYA, 24 August 2020 – Nestlé Malaysia and the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to officially launch a pioneering recycling programme involving kerbside collection for two townships in Petaling Jaya. This initiative is in line with Nestlé’s efforts to shape a waste-free future and is aimed at encouraging good recycling habits amongst local communities in Malaysia.

The launch of this pioneering project will see Nestlé’s partnership with MBPJ scale up new and existing kerbside collection for recycling in Bandar Sri Damansara and Ara Damansara. Nestlé Malaysia also recently launched a recycling collection programme in People’s Housing Project (PPR) Lembah Subang 1 in Taman Putra Damai in partnership with waste separation and recycling solution provider, iCycle.

Present during the MoU signing ceremony, YBhg Dato’ Mohd Sayuthi bin Bakar, Mayor of Petaling Jaya, said, “On average, each Malaysian generates 1.17kg of waste daily . Approximately 90% of all domestic waste goes to landfills and already, there are too many landfills in Malaysia overflowing with waste. This project will provide the opportunity to promote better recycling habits by making it more accessible for the community. We hope that this joint effort will inspire Malaysians to manage their waste responsibly and make recycling part of their daily lives.”

Mr Juan Aranols, Chief Executive Officer, Nestlé (Malaysia) Berhad commented, “As a company dedicated to shaping a waste-free future, we are committed to being part of the solution to bring about positive change. Alongside our proactive measures to pivot to eco-friendly ways, including our recent transition to paper straws for our UHT range, we recognise the need to inspire positive behavioural change for an effective and lasting impact on the environment. This partnership with MBPJ and our recently launched PPR programme will benefit over 13,000 households, and we hope to expand to more communities moving forward.”

“We are also pleased to unveil our new packaging communications, which features recycling education on-pack, to communicate to consumers on how to separate their Nestlé product packaging to facilitate recycling. This will be carried on 80% of all Nestlé recyclable packaging by end-2020.”

Dato' Adnan Pawanteh, Executive Director, Group Corporate Affairs Nestlé (Malaysia) Berhad at the signing ceremony between Nestlé (Malaysia) Berhad and MBPJ.

All these efforts are part of our commitment to ensure that none of our packaging, including plastics, ends up in landfills or as litter, by tackling plastic waste across the value chain – from what we put into our packaging, to what we communicate on our packaging, and encouraging responsible waste management by creating a stronger recycling culture,” added Mr Aranols.

This includes Nestlé’s recent announcement to implement 100% paper straws across its entire UHT range by end-2020, which will eliminate over 200 million paper straws per year, as well as CAREton Project, a partnership between Nestlé MILO® UHT and Tetra Pak® (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. to recycle 45 million drink packs in 2020. To date, the project has collected over 95 million drink packs.
