1.3 Million Steps Closer to A Heart-Healthy Nation

14,788 Malaysians virtually unite in NESTLÉ OMEGA PLUS’ Walk A Million Miles for their hearts and in support of heart patients in need

Petaling Jaya, 23 September 2020 – One week left into the month-long Walk A Million Miles event organized by NESTLÉ OMEGA PLUS, a total of 14,788 Malaysians have stepped out to combat high cholesterol in a journey towards a heart-healthy nation.

As a leading heart health advocate, NESTLÉ OMEGA PLUS launched this virtual walking event early this month in conjunction with World Heart Month. This movement is part of its efforts to create awareness and to provide a simple solution for Malaysians to take the first steps towards caring for their heart health by walking together as a nation.

As of 18 September 2020, a total of 533,337 miles (equivalent to 1.3 million steps) have been achieved. “We are truly proud of the progress of the Walk A Million Miles event to-date and happy that Malaysians have been contributing towards the one-million-mile goal by walking for not only their hearts, but also for heart patients in need,” said Lam Pui Yuee, Business Executive Officer, Milks Business Unit, Nestlé (Malaysia) Berhad.

Once the milestone of a million miles is achieved by the Walk A Million Miles participants, NESTLÉ OMEGA PLUS will donate RM100,000 to its heart health partners Yayasan Jantung Malaysia (YJM) and Institut Jantung Negara Foundation (IJNF) in support of heart patients in need.

“YJM and IJNF has been long-standing partners of our heart health initiatives because this is truly a cause that is close to our hearts at NESTLÉ OMEGA PLUS. With one week left to the end of World Heart Month, we are calling out to Malaysians to take action today and join Walk A Million Miles for their hearts and for a good cause that benefits the hearts of fellow Malaysians in need,” said Lam.

Heart patient Azri bin Adam, 49, a beneficiary of IJNF, is self-employed and was first diagnosed in 2014 at the age of 43. “I still have frequent visits to IJN due to my poor lifestyle and eating habits in the past. Eating healthy and leading an active lifestyle is so important. I can’t express how much it means to us when we realized that fellow Malaysians are walking together in support of heart patients like us,” said Azri.

Construction site supervisor retiree Muttukumar A/L G. Krisnan, 62, is one of the heart patients who is currently a beneficiary of IJNF. First diagnosed at 42 years old, Muttukumar often fainted at work, and was subsequently referred to IJN due to heart complications.

The main cause of his current condition is due to poor eating habits, long working hours, and lack of exercise. “Pay more attention to your health. I hope that my journey will inspire more people to take better care of themselves,” said Muttukumar who also refrains from smoking and drinking alcohol to take care of his health.

After Muttukumar was diagnosed, he began to control his food portion and cut down on sweetened drinks. The father of two believes that a healthy family relationship is another important factor in promoting overall health. “Besides watching your diet, make sure to spend more time with your loved ones and don’t only focus on work.”

With one more week left, NESTLÉ OMEGA PLUS is encouraging all Malaysians to walk for their hearts, their loved ones and for a good cause this month. Anyone can take the first step by joining Walk A Million Miles and walk daily, on their own time and pace and kickstart a new habit, which can become part of their heart health care routine.

For the entire month of September, NESTLÉ OMEGA PLUS’ Walk A Million Miles campaign will hold a series of events to commemorate World Heart Month and remind Malaysians on the importance of heart health care, including a live workout session on 27 September at 5.30pm with Sharifah Sakinah and Zul Ariffin and heart healthy recipes by celebrity chef Dato’ Fazley Yaakob on TV3’s Helo Doktor. Malaysians can also stream the session live on tonton.com.my.
