Improving nutrition through fibre-rich grains, vegetables, nuts or seeds
Vegetables, grains, pulses, nuts and seeds are important dietary sources of vitamins, minerals and dietary fibre. However, Malaysians from all walks of life continue to suffer from a lack of fibre and wholegrains.
To help close this gap, we aim to help increase the consumption of wholegrains and dietary fibre amongst consumers by prioritising wholegrains, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds as key ingredients in some of our products.
Amongst these include:
Address under-nutrition through micronutrient fortification
The 2022 Global Nutrition Report highlighted the nutrition consequences derived from the COVID-19 pandemic, with the lack of access to healthy and sustainable diets contributing to rising malnutrition issues worldwide.
Reflecting this global trend, UNICEF reported that child stunting in Malaysia is estimated to have risen to 21.9% in 2022. Meanwhile, the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2022 and 2019 revealed that one in three adolescents and nearly 50% of adults in Malaysia are overweight or obese. The NHMS findings also reported concerning levels of iron deficiency, with 29.9% of women of reproductive age (15-49 years) and 46.5% of children (6-59 months) having anaemia.
Understanding the important role of micronutrients in addressing under-nutrition among both Malaysian children and adults, we fortify our products with essential micronutrients.
In 2023, we provided our consumers with 3.8 billion servings of micronutrient fortified products. 100% of our MILO and milk products as well as breakfast cereals are fortified with important micronutrients.
Some examples include:
As consumers become increasingly health-conscious, we are committed to supporting the journey towards good health and well-being through our products. Utilising our scientific-based solutions, we have proactively reformulated our recipes to progressively reduce added sugar and sodium levels across our portfolio. Since 2017, a total of 74 products and 50 products have undergone added sugar and sodium reduction respectively.
