The amount of waste the world creates is rising at an alarming rate. The quantity of solid waste generated each year – much of which finds its way into water bodies and oceans – is expected to reach 2.59 billion tonnes by 2030 and to continue to grow throughout the century.
We need to transform how we use and reuse the world’s natural resources. We are working to eliminate waste from our own activities and going beyond that to educate, raise awareness and identify actions to reduce food waste across the globe.
Our vision that none of our packaging, including plastics, ends up in landfill or as litter, drives us to produce products that will have minimal environmental impact to the planet. This simply means, we need to use our resources as efficiently as we can and ensure that we manage our waste disposal responsibly.
Since 2017, 100% of our Nestlé factories in Malaysia have upheld a “zero waste to landfill” status. While this has not been an easy journey, we are proud to have consistently maintained this over the years.
We have systematic processes in place to ensure that all our waste is disposed responsibly. This includes the following:
- All recyclable materials that we produce, including paper, plastic, glass and rejected products, are sent for appropriate recycling.
- The organic waste generated through our operations is converted into animal feed or organic fertilisers.
- Remaining materials, which is primarily damaged packaging and rejected products, are inspected by our waste management contractor to ensure that no recyclable material has been overlooked.
- It is then delivered as fuel for energy recovery facilities, where it is used to generate valuable energy.
- All our waste is managed by appointed licensed contractors with relevant permits from local authorities.
